Hmmm...well give this a try.

Logged in as root....
open a terminal and type,

cd /usr/local/emc
chmod 666 BDI_build
chmod 755 BDI_build
./BDI_build

If that doesn't make the file executable
then it some have something to do with
trying to run it from KDE. I don't have my
emc box here, but when you log off from KDE
doesn't it give you an option to reboot into
console mode?
