I think that the isa bus is the bottleneck that holds up the pc as
opposed to the alpha.
I have been looking at building a distributed super computer/ beowulf
cluster, and the AMD does pretty well in comparison to even the newest
alphas for considerably less money. Unfortunately for Intel, the PIII
gets blown away in these comparisons
If you look into the mobo parports on intel architecture machines you
will find that they use the isa bus or its analog for the parport. A
pci bus parport would therefore be much quicker. I second what Jon says
about the interrupt-- it isn't used and you don't need it.
The other thing is i have a digital alpha motherboard hanging on the
wall of my lab that only has 64bit pci slots on it. How did microway
shoehorn the isa bus onto an alpha mobo-- it must be a bit of an
engineering nightmare.
