This is the one thing which is REALLY lacking - there are CAD packages which
will do most of what people want and EMC and Backplot make a good job of the
other end but there is this gap in the middle which needs filling.

In my opinion FWIW sorting out a gpl .dxf to g-code interpreter would be a
very good starting point.  I really can't see the point of trying to design
a completely new CAD system when there are so many already in existence and
a whole load of linux-based projects on-going to do just that.
