I thought about mentioning that, but decided not to throw any more confusion
into this.  But, in the BIOS setup, it is possible to "overclock' the ISA bus

on many motherboards.  This often causes all SORTS of subtle problems
such as corrupted disks, snow on old VGA screens and other abnormal
behavior.  He might try the 'restore default settings' option in the BIOS
setup.
