Wow!  That's quite a hack.  I'm impressed.

That sounds right for the processor that you have.  You might consider a
newer release and steppermod.  If so grab the source files from the dropbox
*81.src.aaa aab aac or something like that  But you will have to compile
them.

I wonder if this is a problem of pull up or pull down resistors?  Is it
common to all of the signals?

You can just delete them.  See mini.ini in the bdi for an example of a
stripped down ini file.
