This sounds like an Xwindows problem.  Is Xwindows running when he tries
to run this (presumably with the TkEMC GUI)?  IF not, he should be
using xemc instead.  There is some procedure that sets the environment
variable $DISPLAY to something like nodename:0:0 when the X server
comes up.  If X is up when he is doing this, then either somebody has
done something that changed this variable, or X is not properly
installed.  If he is trying to run TkEMC from ANOTHER node, then
he must set the $DISPLAY variable to point to that node, and also
set X security to allow the Xserver to accept X connections from the
EMC node.

This should cover the possible problems that would cause this
message.
