Is it possible that /usr/src/linux has the old 2.2.5 source and
/usr/src/rtlinux-2.2/linux has the new 2.2.14 prepatched with rtlinux 2.2?
What directory were you in when you untarred rtlinux-2.2?
If this were the case you might try this:
cd /usr/src
mv linux linux-2.2.5
ln -s rtlinux-2.2/linux linux
