Larry,
I'm on mindspring and they have a little bit of info on using linux, but
essentially you just need the DNS number from them for web access. Kppp was
simpler to set up than windows ppp. For email services, you just need the
address for your mail server, which is also needed for windows email. Unless
your ISP uses a proprietary method of accessing the internet (like AOL) then
you should be able to do with Linux.
I did run iexplorer and it surfs the web quite nicely. That will be kind of
useful. Interaction between linux and windows is kind of limited - I haven't
been able to cut/copy/paste between the two, but I didn't expect that to work
anyway.
Back on the subject of CAM and linux, I found that I can access the windows
directories from linux. So, a person should be able to write linux/tcl scripts
and pass them to the windows folders while simultaneously running a windows
program ie make up Vector plc script and feed it while drawing. So, if we get
probing a part set up in EMC, it will be easy to send the coordinates to the
CAD/CAM package. I'm excited about the possibilities now.
