O.K. - just tried that. Still nothing in /plat/rtlinux_09J/bin - I did get one
worrying error message flash by on the screen : -
(cd emcnml; make PLAT=linux_2_0_36 -k clean;)
make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/local/emc/src/emcnml'
/usr/local/rcslib/etc/generic.def:766: .depend.linux_2_0_36: No such file or directory
touch .depend
cp .depend .depend.linux_2_0_36

This was just after all the files had been untared by the install script, and
is repeated for all the emc/src directories (except java/). The same happens
for the PLAT=rtlinux_09J,yet when ./compile is run, these errors don't appear.
- /plat/rtlinux_09J/bin is still empty. I suspect a problem with either the
make files or my version of Make. 
make -v gives me a version No. 3.76.1
and just for the record, gcc -v is 2.7.2.3 and g++ is egcs 2.90.29
Not that I would expect the version numbers to make much difference !

BTW Is there a full list of ALL the files that should be in PLAT/bin ?
