Running a few tests with the latest CVS sources on the Athlon 1800, achieved 
around 60KHz - 12500 steps per inch at 300 ipm. With a little bit more 
tuning, I'd imagine this could go higher. At these frequencies, interrupt 
latencies have a significant effect on the stability of the output - The read 
/write timings of the parallel port may also limit the theoretical maximum 
frequency.

Ultimately, it will be the stepper motors and drive electronics that will 
determine the maximum usable frequency.
