You can skip x by editing /etc/initab like the snip below.

Since you plan on using networking you want to use runlevel 3 rather than 
2.  I believe that you could add a script or link to a script in 
/etc/rc.d/rc3.d that would start your VNC and EMC sans the x-windows 
stuff if you want to get to the complete blackbox notion on boot.

How does operating using tkemc through VNC feel?  Would you be 
comfortable running your RF 45 that way or is the response to slow or 
squishy?
