automatic boot up and login - VNC related

I set up VNC again yesterday with the 2.12 BDI system. As soon as I
figure out how to run Lyx, I will send Ray a document on how I did it.
My question today is: How can one set up the EMC BDI system to log in
automatically and launch a program right after it logs in? It has
something to do with rc.d or an rc file somewher, but I am a weekend
warrior when it comes to this and haven't figured it out yet.
Also, I have forgotten how to set up to NOT boot into X. When I boot
up now, I type in 'linux 3' at the lilo prompt. This gets me there
temporarily.

It's kind of funny how I decided to set up VNC on this particular
machine. The monitor is not cooperating on the X set up, so I got fed
up and am using it through VNC on my Apple Cube under OS X. It does run
adequately this way- the speed is a little slow, since there is a slow
10 base T network between them. But it is OK.

While I'm at it.... What are people doing to transfer files to linux
boxes nowdays. I have OS X on one system, Win98 on another, and a few
EMC machines running. The OS X machine could be set up as a Samba
server, with the EMC machines receiving files generated
from the Win 98 CAD/CAM machine. What are some of the options? ftp
from the server, telnet, etc?

Thanks,
Dan
