Try this at the command line :-

cd /usr/local/emc
/usr/X11R6/bin/xinit -e /usr/local/emc/emc.run

Assuming EMC is in the /usr/local directory, this will fire up EMC along with 
X. To automatically run EMC when launching a window manager is a little more 
involved. Some use a seperate list of applications to run on start up - It 
depends on which one you're using.

To run EMC from a text console, use keystick in the ini file instead of tkemc 
or xemc.
