of course, you have to enter the "dmesg" command after it has booted up, on
the command prompt.

crtl s doesn't stop the screen - it seems to ignore keyboard input.

Further, you don't have a command prompt during bootup so you can't
enter:

dmesg | less

Any other suggestions?
