freqmod, period, and max velocity

I've had a few questions about settings for some critical ini variables.

It seems to me that when you are using freqmod, the ini variables PERIOD and
MAX VELOCITY times INPUT SCALE exhibit some kind of inverse relationship.  

It also seems that settting values for the variables listed is affected by
the speed of the PC that is running the EMC.  Following error messages and
EMC shutdown is the logical result of attempting to run with values
that exceed this relationship.

Is it possible to develop a computational formula that relates computer
speed (bobomips or ??) with the mentioned variables.  This is not a test so
guessing and itterations are encouraged!

I'm also wondering if this relationship will be affected by the quantity of
other ordinary linux stuff running or do the realtime/nonrealtime
platforms work to separate these issues successfully into motor vs
task and display. 

I'm certain that we have enough variety of PC's available and folk who would
test whatever formula(s) we can construct.
