Re: bdi-emc

There is a good deal of confusion between the numbers of the kernel itself,
the real-time kernel, and the numbers assigned to their boxes by the
various linux distributors.

The default kernel and real-time kernel with Paul's BDI is linux 2.2.18 and
rtlinux 3.0. Paul has included the linux 2.4 kernel as well but you would
have to build that one yourself.

For machine control, it doesn't make a lot of difference which kernel you
use. Many still use the linux 2.0.36 and real-time kernel rtlinux..09J.
They do this because they have found it to be very stable. We are hoping
that the BDI will prove to be as stable and will become the EMC workhorse.

More recent kernels and releases have some features that are not available
in the earlier releases. They also have a lot more device drivers and such
that make them easier to install on a wider variety of PC's. But most of
those features are not needed on a dedicated machine tool controller.

If you plan to work on the bleading edge of EMC and motion control, then
you will want newer kernels as time goes on. But the BDI will be a good
place to start.

Hope this helps.
