installation problems

    I hate to fess up but I've had considerable
installation problems and now have some ideas
about the cause.

I get my downloads from a friend with a cdrom
burner and a dsl line. He is running Windoze 98
which can do bad things to long filenames.
Therefore it is often difficult to tell versions
of emc , 2.0.36 vs 2.2.14, by the time they arrive
on the cd.
I finally carefully downloaded all of the nist and
sourceforge versions into separate directories on
the cd...so there was no doubt about which version
was which.
Even with the ppmc patches from Jon my 2.0.36 emc
built on the first try. < big big grin>

Considering how much trouble prospective users of
emc seem to be having with building the software I
wonder if some of them are running into the same
problem and not being lucky enough to recognize it
as such. Credit here goes to Matt Shaver for
asking if this could be my problem.
