I tried  http://www.linuxcnc.org/Dropbox/XmEmc1.tgz
on an older 1998 RedHat version, and was missing
libstdc++-libc6.1-1.so.2     so it didn't run.

However,  it ran perfectly fine on a new installation of
Mandrake 7.2   (although gzip still complained of a
short file after  1,229,908 bytes).

There were previous comments on the axis readouts
disappearing, but that didn't happen for me (although
they never changed from zero ).
