Subject: EMC On A Laptop
I think it was Ray who, some time ago, asked if
anyone has ever got
EMC runing on a laptop. Maybe it was someone else.
Anyway, I just
recently loaded the ZipEmc distributation, without too much
trouble, on
my Dell Latitude CPT - S500 which has a Celeron 500, 6 gig hd,
and 32
meg of ram. The trouble I ran into was that the version of XFree86
that
comes with the ZipEmc disk does not support the Mach 64 Rage
video
card that is in the latitude. While linux worked fine, X would not
come
up in anything better than 320 X 200 resolution.
I have the same condition on a desktop
machine, The next part is what I am not sure of.
I downloaded the new version of XFree86 and
installed it without any trouble.
I can download using Win 98, but lost on
getting it in the right spot and loading. How do I find out how to do
this? Maybe a different video card would use the server available. I can
start SIM and see the X readout.
Running the X setup program is now pretty
painless, You don't even need to answer any questions, It was all automatic. X
came up first time in 1024 X 768. Although I have not hooked it to my machine,
EMC seems to work
fine.
