Don't try to use the home function unless you have
home switches (or you know that the computer will be
reading the unconnected pins as home switch closed).
Just start EMC and the GUI, and you should see the
position display change whan you move the shaft.

There are two things that you need to do, but don't bother
with the home stuff.  First, press F1, which sets the current
position as the place to hold at until further commands and
sends a signal to turn on the servo amps (coming out of
E-stop).  Then, press F2, which goes to state 'Machine On',
and sends a signal to enable the servo amps, and causes
the DAC to output the result of the PID calculation.
If you haven't pressed F2, you won't get any servo
output to the amps.
