I am on earthlink also and found that they do in fact support Linux
at least over the phone line I'm not sure about DSL or cable modem
check the tech support section for the DNS settings at
http://help.earthlink.net/techsupport/generic_settings/settings.html
and for Netscape config go to
http://help.earthlink.net/techsupport/other_os_menu.html
and look under Linux

if someone from tech support told you that they dont support Linux 
it was probably because they didnt know anything about Linux and
didnt want to admit it 
people are funny about things like that
