You might want to look at using Tcl/Tk rather than loosing yourself in C/C++.
Trying to find the right libraries and the exact syntax to use for a GUI can
be difficult if you're not familiar with linux.
Tcl/Tk has the advantage that the EMC "hooks" have already been written, and
it is easier to follow than pure C.
If you wanted to do your own thing in C/C++, might I suggest using fltk from
www.fltk.org - It has it's own IDE which should make programming a little
easier.
