I believe it is a vestige of the RT0.9J vintage, which didn't have the

to create a physically contiguous shared memory segment allocated within

the Linux memory space.  I think this variable only has a use when the
shared memory space is allocated with the LILO append="mem=xxm"
command.  I believe this OS version/RT version is still
supported by the #ifdef monstrosity in the EMC code.  Even though I'm
still running this on my milling machine, I would not argue for this
compatibility to be retained.
