Great news indeed - The changes have been committed to Sourceforge and to the 
next BDI sources. I should have spotted my mistake sooner.

There is not too much work involved in putting together an IO controller to 
use some of the spare STG IO pins. Just need to verify that the unused 
outputs not used in a four axis machine will conflict with the realtime IO. 
In all probability, it may require some minor changes to the STG driver so 
that one port at least can be used for digital outputs.
