I haven't done this. The latest revision we have run on is Red Hat 5.2,
with kernel 2.0.36. Some people have reported that they installed Red
Hat 6.0, re-installed the 2.0.36 kernel headers and sources, installed
the 0.9J (or 1.0) real-time patch, rebuilt the kernel, and installed the
EMC. I haven't done this and it looks like many Red Hat 6.0 things will
break. Certainly SMP and other features of the 2.2 kernel will go away
since you'd be running kernel 2.0.36.
It would be best if we ported to kernel 2.2. We will do this eventually
but we're wrapping up some EMC loose ends that we want to get done
before we do the port.
If you want to try it, here's the procedure:
1. Install Red Hat 6.0 and the appropriate real-time patch for the 2.2
series kernels.
2. Modify the EMC source code that is likely to break, namely the motion
controller and its communication interface. These are
emc/src/emcmot/emcmot.c and emc/src/emcmot/usrmotintf.c, respectively.
I don't think it will be a huge effort, but I won't know until I get
into it.
