Sounds like you know a lot about what you are saying though much of what you 
wrote sounds like Klingon to me.

Would you consider becoming a developer and working with the 14 or so members 
there on sourceforge?  We may be getting close to enough extra talent to pull 
off a rewrite.

I think what you are seeing is the fact that the project was imagined at a 
time when some folk thought that the USA was in a CNC crisis.  NIST was asked 
to attack the problem from at least three directions at the same time and to 
develop a working test bed in an almost impossibly short schedule.

Having achieved the initial test, Matt Shaver stepped in and asked if he 
could apply the code to a production machine.  And now there are many 
production machines running variants of the code.  Perhaps it is time for a 
thoughtful discussion of the tasks that we have for this project and how we 
can better meet them by a rewrite.
