This may be the fault of the emc.ini.  If it doesn't have the variable

5220  1.0000

the new interpreter doesn't know what coordinate system to start with. 
For the details see Will's post of 17 Jan 2000.  (I know this because I had
to add this line to the file on an install this morning)
