You should be able to remove the module named steppermod by running lsmod
as root.  The command line is 

lsmod steppermod

rmmod should show you what modules are being used.  I have noticed that the
latest RPM doesn't seem to remove steppermod all the time when you close
down the EMC.  It never dows if EMC doesn't start up properly.
