I tried the same as you. I suppose you are a better electrician as i am, but all i can tell is that the L297/298 is not the easyest thing to do for beginners. I found it easyer to build up a 6Motor Driver Card with the ericsson (or JRC) NJM3517D2 . It has less external components. Another interesting alternative is the nanotec.de controller/driver chip. Less external components I have never seen. This one is also available as SMC42 single Motor Driver to be put on a DIN rail. Have a look at it!
