RE:New project...PCI based servo control board

Hi Ray/list,

My name is Craig Edwards, I've just joined this list recently, and thought I
should provide a short intro post. Actually, I've been lurking for some
time, trying to learn more about EMC, but have not really had the time to
stay current enough with the list to participate.

My interest is primarily in multi-axis servo based motion control systems,
so EMC is naturally a piece of technology I want to learn more about. Short
term, I won't be able to contribute much to the software (nor do I have much
experience in CNC..), but I can offer hardware design capabilities (I'm a EE
by training). And, with the support of the company I work for, I can get
some prototypes built.

Actually, I started on a project around a year to define and build a PCI
based servo control board, but work and other "real world" events conspired
to stop progress. I've tried to solicit some feedback for requirements on a
couple of other forums, but most were/are interested in a more "distributed"
sort of solution based around USB or Ethernet. Too much latency for a high
performance servo system; but, of course, fine for open loop steppers.

Anyway, I'm thinking this group might be more interested in this project; if
so, I would like to try to attend NAMES just to meet some of you and to
better understand requirements for the "ideal" servo / encoder interface
board that could be easily used by EMC. If it would be OK with the group,
I'd like to stay for Monday's meeting as well. I'd like to learn more about
the algorithms implemented in EMC, timing considerations, etc.

Regards,
Craig Edwards
