Finally!!  The problem with my rtl modules not being found was that for
some reason, no mention of them was in the modules.dep file.  A simple
matter of running

/sbin/depmod -a

fixed the problem.  Many thanks to all for the assistance!!  Now back to
my regularly scheduled wrestling with freqmod!!!!
