I've been running this as root so the insmod and rmmod 
steps work. which is probably wrong and certainly silly.

this looks like the linux box is not running the rtkernel.
Are you using lilo? 
what does 
cat /proc/version
say? 

also check /lib/modules/`uname -r`/modules.dep
to ensure rtl.o has appropriate (some) dependencies. 
or rather that rtl_fifo.o depends on rtl.o
Looks like rtl.o has not been loaded.

eg cat /proc/version 
Linux version 2.2.18-rtl3.0 (root-at-Virlan) (gcc version egcs-2.91.66
19990314/Linux (egcs-1.1.2 release)) #1 Wed Jun 20 09:35:03 BST 2001

is there a rtl3.something?

I'm running 2.2.18 with rtlinux3.0 here.
