On the machine I'm building I have made the nuts as bronze blocks and I have
got rid of all backlash without adding to the drag by fixing one block to
the moving bit and coupling the other block to it with four bolts - two
pulling the block together and two pushing them apart. By adjusting the
bolts against each other and so adjusting the distance apart of the nuts, it
is possible to take up all the backlash in a very controlled manner. I have
had to make a special tube spanner to get at the bolts for ongoing
adjustment when everything is together but the principle seems to work well.
